Blog Post 1

My name is Anthoni Jacobs, I’m a 32-year-old post-baccalaureate student in pursuit of a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction-English Education, with an emphasis on creative writing. My goal is to teach high school English in an effort to make a positive impact in underprivileged communities. I hope to utilize the skills we learn throughout this course, such as culturally responsive teaching, in conjunction with a little empathy and understanding, to reach as many students as possible.

The image I chose emphasizes the importance of inclusion and diversity. I aspire to have a positive impact on all of my students regardless of race, religion, gender, or ability. I believe too many children, specifically in underprivileged communities, are deprived of the opportunity to learn due to a lack of mutual respect, empathy and understanding, and culturally relevant materials. I hope to embody what this image represents, and aim to change the narrative surrounding urban education.

I chose to share links to both a list of Charles G. Woodson Book Awards winners as well as Notable Books for a Global Society. Both aim to promote books highlighting different cultural groups and minorities. I feel these will both be helpful tools when searching for culturally relevant materials for future students.
